Good Practice in the library
Browsing the shelves? Always return the book to its exact position (do not just put in the empty space at the end of the shelf).
- Adjust your chair so that your legs are at 90 degrees to the floor and your back is well supported.
- Remember to take regular breaks – in the coffee lounge or elsewhere. The library is an academic space not a common room.
- Use shelf markers to show where to return journals.
- Use yellow tickets for no more than 5 books not issued to you that you will use the next day. Two days after the last date they will be returned to circulation. Do not leave books issued to you among the piles – these books can be borrowed and returned by other students (the risk is books issued to you could be mislaid by someone else but charged to you).
- Only use pink workplace tickets if returning within 3 hours or first thing in the morning after last thing at night. After 3 hours all your belongings may be removed to allow others to use the space. Remember, only 5 books in addition to those issued to you. Keep books issued to you in a bag so that they do not go missing.
- Return Reference books immediately to their exact location, NEVER leave on your pile or workspace – these books need to be always available to everyone.
- Return Temporary Reference books likewise, to the Temporary Reference shelves (not the Returns Trolley) to their exact location – among the books with the same shelfmark, then in alphabetical order of author.
- Use bookmarks rather than turning books over and laying them flat on the open pages. Bookmarks may be found by the piles and workplace tickets.
RULES REMINDER
- NO TALKING – apart from in the Library Reception. If communication is absolutely necessary only whisper. If you want/need to discuss work move into the Reception area or leave the library.
- NO TALKING IN THE IT SUITE – some people have nowhere else to research, word process etc. This is not a recreation space.
- NO FOOD OR DRINK – only bottled water – NO CUPS. Do not bring food in to the library to eat elsewhere later unless it remains hidden in a bag.
- NO MUSIC – except through ear phones (no-one else should be able to hear it at all).
- NO MARKING OR WRITING IN BOOKS.
- NO REMOVAL OF JOURNALS, THESES OR PAMPHLETS FROM THE JOURNALS ROOM.
- ONLY ISSUED BOOKS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE LIBRARY.
No library can operate without rules. Each rule has a reason. Please speak to me if you are not clear about these rules and practices.
