PhD Student

Denise is currently studying part time at Regents Theological College for a PhD in Applied Theology. She is active in many areas of her local Elim Church, including food bank, debt ministry and community outreach activities. With a background working in Women’s Aid, she now runs the ‘Freedom Program’ for victims of domestic abuse, which she has adapted for use in a faith context. She provides ongoing pastoral and spiritual support for women dealing with domestic abuse and its long-term effects. Denise has also preached on domestic abuse and advises ministers on this, often taboo, subject.

Research

Denise’s PhD research focuses on the way that Pentecostal ministers in the UK deal with domestic abuse in their own congregations. Using qualitative research methods, she is investigating why a problem which affects 1 in 4 women in the UK remains largely unrecognised within a faith context, highlighting areas of good practice and identifying ways to improve the support offered by ministers and the wider church community.
