I entered Elim Bible College in Capel as a student in 1983. Following two years of study, I was invited to work in the office, which turned into 22 years as Principal’s Secretary, Faculty Administrator, and latterly Registrar. I finally left Regents in 2007, and joined Elim Missions, working with the Elim Church in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. Elim Malawi was established in 1984 and currently has approximately 250 churches across the country, mostly in the rural areas. Many of the pastors had not received any training, so my initial task was to set up a Bible College. It was a challenge to find myself teaching some of the courses, but immensely rewarding.
Returning home two and a half years later, I then spent eighteen months in Haiti, followed by two years as associate pastor in Tamworth, returning to Malawi in 2014. Elim Malawi has four primary schools, and seven children’s homes, caring for 42 children and young people. In my role of overseeing the children’s homes, one of the highlights was hosting a Christmas party this year in each one, thanks to donations received through the Elim Global Christmas Appeal. It was such a treat to enjoy a special meal of chicken, rice, vegetables and Fanta, followed by lots of laughter as we played games together. The children’s gratitude to God was shown at the end of each party when they thanked Him for the many blessings received.
Every week I visit two regions and conduct a bible study in the morning, and a Kids Club in the afternoon. It is so encouraging to see people grow in their Christian faith, ask questions in a safe environment, and memorise scripture. It is great to see children worshipping and praying, and gathering around those who are unwell to pray passionately for them.
I find it an incredible privilege to serve here, and to be involved in the lives of the lovely, gentle people of Malawi in “The Warm Heart of Africa”.
